John Wick (2014)
I watched it on a 10-hour flight, so the perfect circumstances for enjoying mindless entertainment. Personally, I have a soft spot for Keanu Reeves ever since his Matrix days, and the r/movies community seemed to get a great deal of enjoyment out of this action flick, despite the ridiculous premise: “An ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him,” according to IMDb.
No, not everything! They took his car and his dog, not everything. I get it, I like dogs, too. But we’re not talking about his life companion here, but a dog he literally owned for a little over 24 hours.
Or perhaps I’m not seeing the bigger picture. Perhaps the takeaway is that the incident makes him realize that he needs to get a life, stat, and so he returns to being a badass gangster, because that’s all he ever knew. Come to think of it, perhaps this movie is deeper than I gave it credit for. But I ended up turning it off after an hour, because by that time at least fifty or so people had been killed — all because of that dog.
Do yourself a favor and take your pet for a walk instead of watching this string of gratuitous shootout scenes. Or, if you find yourself on an airplane, check out the nature documentaries!
One star for Theon Greyjoy playing yet another little shit.
