Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)
Last year, I went to see the first installment of the Maze Runner series, because it was the only movie playing at the time that somewhat interested me. Turns out it was a lot more entertaining than I expected. While not nearly as iconic and interesting as The Hunger Games, fans of YAF may still find it to be surprisingly thrilling and original.
So it pains me to say that the second part is none of these things. Instead, it relies on cheap thrills involving zombies (yawn) and cliched interpretations of the evil scientist overlord (Patricia Clarkson) and her henchman (Aidan Gillen). The whole movie (story, cast, even entire scenes) feels mind-numbingly derivative of numerous other shows (The Walking Dead, the Divergent series, The 100…), some of which aren’t that great either, but still more interesting than this pile of recycled garbage.
