Without considering myself a huge fan, I must say I quite enjoyed the latest James Bond movies starring Daniel Craig. I always felt that he brought a certain vulnerability to the role that I found quite intriguing. It certainly added something else to the tired themes of evil supervillains, hot chicks, and cool gadgets.
With Spectre, however, it seems that even Daniel Craig can no longer save a franchise that is in dire need of reinvention. The story doesn’t offer anything we haven’t seen before: an international terror conglomerate; a helicopter chase; a fight on a luxury train somewhere in the desert, a hot girl with daddy issues… Even the usually fantastic Christoph Waltz is underutilized in an ungrateful role of a villain who couldn’t be more derivative. Maybe Spectre was meant as a nod to the good old days, but instead of nostalgia, boredom prevails. And heavy eye-rolling.
It comes as no surprise then that even the lead actor is tired of 007 and his world of cliches. This martini needs some stirring! Perhaps casting Idris Elba as James Bond could be a step in the right direction…
