Into the Forest (2015)
Into the Forest is based on a novel written by a woman and directed by a woman, and in the male dominated world of film, I support female-led ventures to the core. That said, in my book, feminism doesn’t have to be this boring.
The sad truth is that Into the Forest drags on for a long time without much happening. I get that we are supposed to focus on the sisters and their relationship with each other. But the very basic script makes it hard to feel emotionally connected to the characters, or to understand their motivations.
For a science fiction film, which implies the opportunity to rethink the world as we know it, Into the Forest is pretty thin on ideas. From what I understand, the book on which it is based is a lot more imaginative and controversial. I’m not sure what the director’s motivations were for making a movie that is less compelling than its source material. But I wish her more courage for her next project.
